What is Pipe and Drape?
Pipe and Drape is (aluminum or steel), fixed or telescopic uprights that are held up by a steel base. Drape supports can either be telescopic or fixed length that provide
support for drapes. Pipe and Drape displays come with or without removable drapes. Pipe and Drape is used to separate, conceal, and/or design a space temporarily. It is
the on of the most cost effective ways to surround booth space at an exhibition, or trade show.Pipe and drape is used frequently for staging, weddings, fashion shows,
concerts, interior design, and in the theatre and it is even used on the set on major television shows and feature films.
How Does A Pipe And Drape System Go Together?
The easiest and most widely used method of hanging drapes is to us a rod pocket where the pipe is simply put through the rod pocket. Uprights, as noted, are normally
made from aluminum tubing, fixed or telescopic, with heights from 3’ to 26’ (must be custom ordered). Uprights are supported by heavy duty bases weighing from 6 to 62
lb. The floor supports are enhanced by the addition of sand bags or stage weights added for better balance and are based on the height and weight of the items being hung
on the pipe and drape system.The drape supports can also be fixed or adjustable in length. Fixed drape supports range from 1’ to 10’, on the other hand a telescopic drape
support, also known as a slider, can adjust from 2’-3’ to 9’-16’. Drape supports are held together by small metal hooks that are permanently attached to each end of the
drape support. The hooks are then attached into a slot on the upright and held in place by gravity , thereby making the pipe and drape support system. In order to create
longer, wider or taller walls with pipe and drape systems, many sections of drape and drape support are lined based on the number of uprights you have available. These
sections of pipe and drape panels make up the backwall of drapes. Another method of hanging drape is using the tie-on method. Pipe and Drape tie methods used may be
a standard grommet and tie, where the tie and grommet hole are seen unless a clove hitch is used, and once tied, the drape ties must be rolled to hide the ties on the side of
the drapes. Blind ties are another drape top finish that allows for drapes to be tied to a pipe without everyone being able to see the grommets and ties that you have used.
Like Uprights and Drape Supports, drapery panels come in any number of heights, widths, colors, and types of fabric as well as pleating. Drape panels range from
an economical American made polyester tradeshow drape known as Banjo to a thick, luxurious Broadway theatre-style Velour, which is available in various weights. Banjo
is the most commonly used fabric. Typically used in evenly distributed widths, which when added together create fullness. Whereas, higher-quality fabrics are typically
single fabric widths sewn together to create larger continuous drape panels that are made to be sleeved on a single horizontal. The use of Pipe and Drape to
temporarily change the look and feel of an area continues to be a common, practical, and cost effective method.
